How long does it take for the sand to fall down?
I am merely counting the days... to what, you might ask.
Well, I’m still not so sure... but perhaps until I’ll be off somewhere.
A certain restlessness has been growing and I can’t seem to make it stop. But do I want it to stop? I’m just about to hit my second year in the job... and well, it seems like I’ve been there... long enough. I haven’t moved up and is still at the bottom of the food chain while everybody else is being promoted. Yes, something might be wrong with me. (Like the chubby friend of Hugh Grant in ‘Notting Hill’ “Where everybody seems to get promoted except me.”)
Would a promotion make me stay? To tell you honestly, I don’t know.
MAYBE is the most positive answer that I can give. Doesn’t say much of me, I know. Do I want to try out my hand in a different magazine? Maybe. I miss the human interaction and writing feature articles about people and not their houses. I dearly love writing about people. (But then again, if you’re a supposed writer you’re not supposed to be choosy. Well, I beg to disagree. That is why we have a thing called GENRES.)
And I want to write about travelling.
And I would want to write my book now... before I outgrow the story.

Where do we go from here?
A recent trip with college friends reignited the passion to explore, experience, and write about places. And of course, to promote this country of ours as a worthy destination. Yesterday while I was researching at ‘the rough guide site’, www.roughguides.com, for my next trip, I couldn’t help but look up the Philippines. My heart broke a little after reading this,
But perhaps, as the old adage goes, it is in the knowing that gives us the power. With this knowledge, we know where to work on. While it may be the government’s duty to put the streets in order, promote green and clean living, set up a centralized bus station, and setting up taxi counters at airports, as a people, we can do a wee bit of help ourselves. It doesn't ask much of a person to be a bit of a help.
Many must have come across that little boof of Atty. Alexander Lacson's "the Twelve (12) things every Filipino can do to help our country." And as many must have read, these things are really the small things.
1. Follow traffic rules.
2. Whenever you buy or pay for anything, always ask for an official receipt.
3. Do not buy smuggled goods. Buy local. Buy Filipino.
4. When you talk to others, especially to foreigners, speak positively of our race and our country.
5. Respect your traffic officer soldier and other public servants.
6. Do not litter. Dispose your garbage properly. Segregate. Recycle. Conserve.
7. Support your church (or charitable/civic organizations)
8. During elections, do your solemn duty.
9. Pay your employees well.
10. Pay your taxes.
11. Adopt a scholar or adopt a poor child.
13. Be a good parent. Teach your kids to follow the law and to love our country.
Inspired by my recent trips, I am planning to set up my ‘travel site’. If the backpackers and the foreign tourists are repelled by our seemingly dirty and chaotic city, I would celebrate its beauty and uniqueness. This small effort might just compel others to see it with new eyes, and perhaps, instill a little bit of pride. Afterall, if there is pride in our city, our country, we would most likely do it good.
"Manila will never be a serious tourist destination until the authorities deal with the evils of traffic and pollution; most tourists are in the capital because they have a day or two to kill either at the beginning or the end of a trip to the rest of the country.
I couldn't help but agree that these travel writers have a point. Even with the superb job the MMDA has been doing, transforming the metropolis into a seeming liveable city, it is still not enough. . Compared to other SouthEast Asian capitals, Manila fares poorly. But perhaps, as the old adage goes, it is in the knowing that gives us the power. With this knowledge, we know where to work on.
